Medical Supplier Improves TVM and ROI with Xirrus Wi-Fi Arrays, Distributing Network Intelligence to the Edge while Maintaining Central Management

Xirrus®, the leader in High Performance Wi-Fi that delivers the most coverage, bandwidth, and user density in the industry, announced today the deployment of Xirrus high performance 802.11n Wi-Fi Arrays at Professional Hospital Supply (PHS) headquartered in Temecula, California. With seven buildings spread throughout California, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, and Utah, Xirrus was the obvious choice for PHS as they required the fewest number of devices while still offering a central management system to control all Arrays from a single location.
Dave House, Vice President of Information Systems at PHS explains why Xirrus offered a better solution than the competitors, “We looked around and decided upon Xirrus for a number of reasons, primarily the number of access points needed to cover our warehouses. We had another building where we were using a different Wi-Fi vendor. When we sat down and did the comparison between our legacy solution and the Xirrus Wi-Fi Array platform, we found that we’d have to purchase quite a few less access points with Xirrus than the competition – almost a two to one ratio. This meant half the switch ports, cable runs, and devices to install and manage.”

Dave continues by explaining yet another reason Xirrus was the best vendor for the job, “We have a value-added reseller who we are closely aligned with and they had installed Xirrus Arrays in a number of other warehouses similar to ours. We were able to go out there and look at their deployments and were very impressed with what other people had to say about the Xirrus equipment – and they were right, the Arrays work very well.”

“In configuring the Arrays we could do it from our corporate office and administer to the Arrays at all of our other facilities without having to send someone out there,” added Dave. “The remote administration was a big tool for us in the other facilities and we still have four more facilities that we’ll be deploying Xirrus in so central management and ease of configuration was a big reason for choosing Xirrus.”

Hayley Tabor Joins Xirrus to Rapidly Expand Global Footprint and Open New Routes to the Enterprise

Xirrus®, the leader in high performance Wi-Fi, announced today that Hayley Tabor, former senior vice president of U.S. enterprise sales at Juniper Networks®, has joined the Xirrus team as vice president of the company’s worldwide sales. Tabor brings to Xirrus an extensive global network of CIOs and major system integrators with whom she has been doing business for more than 20 years. She will be responsible for adding new professionals to the Xirrus sales team to open up new geographies and routes for the company into the enterprise.

While at Juniper, Tabor built out a highly effective sales coverage and vertical market model to drive aggressive growth through the channel and increased market share across the enterprise.

“From day one, my vision for Xirrus has been to become the ‘Juniper Networks of Wi-Fi,’ delivering the highest performing, highest capacity Wi-Fi architecture to the enterprise and to stake out the high ground against Cisco® and other legacy overlay architectures,” said Dirk Gates, CEO and founder of Xirrus, Inc. “By adding a seasoned executive like Hayley to the team – who knows how to sell performance and build high performance teams – we will supercharge our already remarkable growth rate by leveraging her skills, network, and her proven ability to deliver high growth, open new markets, and find innovative routes to the enterprise.”

“It is a remarkable opportunity to join a company that has grown as fast as Xirrus in recent years and has achieved such an intense and passionate customer following,” said Tabor. “It’s clear to me that only Xirrus was focused on solving the Wi-Fi performance problem for the enterprise. Coming from the switching world, as I looked at the competitors in the Wi-Fi market, I saw that only the Xirrus architecture puts both intelligence and more radios at the edge, closer to the user, thereby closing the gap between Wi-Fi and enterprise switching. When you have an innovative architecture like Xirrus with power and value 3X to 5X greater than anything else in the industry, I truly believe we’re in a great position to make substantial gains on the industry and in our own revenue.”

Previously, Tabor held progressively senior positions at CA focused on the large enterprise including; Canadian country manager, senior vice president of sales for the western U.S., and senior vice president & general manager of Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Xirrus Wi-Fi Arrays Deliver a Scalable Wireless Infrastructure Using Half the Devices

Xirrus®, the Wi-Fi “Power Play” that delivers the most coverage, bandwidth, and user density in the industry, announced today the deployment of Xirrus high performance 802.11n Wi-Fi Arrays at Washington International School, located in Washington D.C. Founded in 1966 to meet the educational needs of Washington’s international community and American families, this coeducational day school educates over 900 students representing more than 90 countries, on two beautiful campuses in the northwest area of D.C. This diverse learning environment found that the Xirrus product was the only solution powerful and robust enough to scale to meet their future wireless initiatives, requiring just half the devices to deploy over competitive solutions.

“When faced with upgrading our inadequate legacy network, we searched for a wireless solution that would cover our entire facility in a very powerful and robust way. The appeal of Xirrus over the competition was the low number of devices required to get excellent coverage throughout the building. Deploying Xirrus was a 50% reduction in the number of devices we would have to purchase, install and manage,” said Chad Fairey, Director of Information Services for Washington International School. “During the Xirrus site survey they were very thoughtful of how the wireless signals would be affected when students were present. A lot of other companies will give you a map based on mathematics, but won’t consider the moving bodies of water the students and faculty represent. This was a major advantage for Xirrus and I’m convinced we made the right choice for our wireless implementation.”

Chad continued, “Scalability was very important to us when developing our wireless network. If we add 300 laptops to the campus next year, we wanted a system that can scale to meet those demands. We are confident the central management tool and the planning tools that are inherent in the Xirrus product will support our future requirements. The architecture of the Array allows us to directionally focus the Wi-Fi signal strength, providing a lot of flexibility and control over our network. The technical support Xirrus offers has been exceptional. Xirrus is one of those systems you put in place and then stop worrying about because the technology just works!”

Xirrus Wi-Fi Arrays Deliver High Performance Connectivity at a Fraction of the Cost for South Vermillion Community Schools

Xirrus®, the Wi-Fi “Power Play” that delivers the most coverage, bandwidth, and user density in the industry, announced today their deployment of Xirrus high performance 802.11n Wi-Fi Arrays across South Vermillion Community School Corporation, located in Clinton, Indiana. This school system is composed of three public elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school, employing nearly 280 staff and educating over 2,000 students. South Vermillion Community Schools selected Xirrus as the Wi-Fi solution because Xirrus was able to deliver higher performance wireless connectivity with fewer devices, saving the district a substantial amount in equipment costs compared to any other vendors offering.

Jenny Fossi, Director of Instructional Technology for South Vermillion Community School Corporation, spoke on her decision to select Xirrus, “We knew we were going to continue to expand our wireless capabilities, greatly increasing our need for a wireless solution that would not only be easily deployed but managed as well. We did a comparison between Xirrus and others — the cost was a huge factor – we really saved on the equipment cost choosing Xirrus. We are continuing to deploy laptops and iPods to all of our schools for the teachers and students, so bringing out the [Wi-Fi] Arrays and running a live site survey was very impressive and provided the confidence we needed to select Xirrus. We haven’t had any difficulties integrating the Arrays into our infrastructure – they are really working for us.”

Unlike other Wi-Fi vendors, Xirrus performs site surveys using real devices to help design a wireless solution capable of delivering the coverage, density, and bandwidth then back up those plans with an implementation guarantee.

“We’ve found the Xirrus product is extremely user friendly – really it has just been seamless. We haven’t had to deal with programming or any support issues – the Arrays are in place and working flawlessly,“ continued Jenny. “Eventually we hope to allow visitors to come in with their own devices. Everyone I have dealt with at Xirrus has been very helpful, very willing to accommodate our goals. I definitely would recommend Xirrus.”

Whatcom Transportation Authority Chose Xirrus for Their Ability to Handle Large Amounts of Wireless Traffic with the Best Return on Investment in the Industry

Xirrus®, the Wi-Fi “Power Play” that delivers the most coverage, bandwidth, and user density in the industry, announced today the deployment of Xirrus high performance 802.11n Wi-Fi Arrays at Whatcom Transportation Authority in Bellingham, Washington. Whatcom is a county-wide public transportation agency with five facilities and 60 full time buses. During a recent fleet upgrade, they chose to wirelessly enable their busses and facilities using Xirrus Wi-Fi Arrays for real-time data and video transfer with seamless execution.
Talking about their decision to deploy Xirrus equipment, Geoff MacCombe, Network and Infrastructure Administrator at Whatcom Transportation Authority said, “A generic wireless access point was not going to handle the traffic. There are only two or three manufacturers looking at high-end, multi-antenna, multi-radio devices. By far, both by cost and by performance, Xirrus was a much better return on investment than anyone else.”

Geoff continued by explaining the Xirrus implementation, “The team came up from Xirrus and we talked about the different styles of deployments we could do and what it would take to cover the necessary length of the transit center and the width of the maintenance base. We then did a site survey, took some measurements, and tested the system. After everything was installed, we looked to see if the numbers remained the same! Everything is as promised and the distance I get – wow! I am very happy with everything Xirrus delivered.”

Manor Lakes P-12 Specialist College Upgrades Network to Provide Students Seamless Wireless Connectivity Campus-wide

Xirrus®, the Wi-Fi “Power Play” that delivers the most coverage, bandwidth, and user density in the industry, announced today their deployment of Xirrus high performance 802.11n Wi-Fi Arrays campus-wide at Manor Lakes P-12 Specialist College, located in Victoria, Australia. Opened in 2009, this unique college solved their campus-wide connectivity issues by upgrading to Xirrus Wi-Fi Arrays. Growing at a rapid pace, Manor Lakes P-12 Specialist College needed a wireless network robust enough to eventually support over 2,500 primary, secondary, and specialist students moving towards 1:1 learning.

When asked why the school replaced their existing Wi-Fi network with Xirrus, Helen Otway, Assistant Principle at Manor Lakes P-12 Specialist College, stated, “We’ve had Wi-Fi installed in the school…but it wasn’t solving our problems of connectivity across the whole college. It was great for short term…but once we had all the kids up and running on the laptop program, all 120 of them, all in the one building, it just didn’t cut it.”

Describing her decision to upgrade to Xirrus, Helen continued on, “We heard about Xirrus and how it can actually connect so many users at the one time…it just really sold the Xirrus to us, because we wanted our kids to be connected. We don’t want students dropping in and out when they are trying to learn, that’s very frustrating and we certainly don’t get students dropping in and out now. Xirrus just works for us the whole time, which is really good.”

The Wall Street Journal Placed Xirrus 3rd Among Technology-based Venture-Backed Companies and 9th Among All Venture-Backed Companies

Xirrus®, the Wi-Fi “Power Play” that delivers the most coverage, bandwidth, and user density in the industry has been ranked by The Wall Street Journal 3rd among technology-based venture-backed companies and 9th among all venture-backed companies, showing once again the strength of their leadership team and continued growth in Wi-Fi networking. Xirrus’ ranking in The Wall Street Journal’s “The Next Big Thing – The Top 50 Venture-Backed Companies” was based on the success of its venture-capital investors (August Capital, Canaan Partners, Gold Hill Capital, InterWest Partners, QuestMark Partners, U.S. Venture Partners); the amount of capital raised over the last three years; the success of its founders and chief executive (Dirk Gates); the recent growth in the value of the company; and a qualitative ranking among the Dow Jones venture-capital reporters and editors.

“We are extremely pleased with the recognition by The Wall Street Journal for our leadership team and financial growth,” said Dirk Gates, founder and CEO of Xirrus. “Sales of our high performance Wi-Fi Arrays continue to grow significantly as more and more organizations see the value of Wi-Fi networking as a means to increase efficiencies of their users. Mobility is the growth area of enterprise telecommunications and Xirrus is the only Wi-Fi platform designed and implemented with the same distributed model as wired switching that puts the power and intelligence at the edge closer to the end user.”

The Xirrus Wi-Fi Array Architecture to Deliver Powerful Wi-Fi Connectivity for Thousands of Users Across Densely Populated Conference Centers

Xirrus®, the Wi-Fi “Power Play” that delivers the most coverage, bandwidth, and user density in the industry announced today that they have been selected to be the official wireless provider for the Interop® Las Vegas (April 25-29, 2010) and New York (October 18-22, 2010). Xirrus was chosen by Interop’s network team to deliver high performance 802.11n coverage for attendees and exhibitors throughout the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas and the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York. This is the fifth time Xirrus has been chosen as the InteropNet wireless provider due to the power and simplicity of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Array platform.

“Interop is the premier event series where IT professionals come to see and learn about the most important solutions the industry has to offer,” said Lenny Heymann, General Manager of Interop. “As part of this series, InteropNet brings together selected technology companies to build and demonstrate a cutting-edge network so attendees can experience these technologies first-hand. Xirrus will help us deliver a powerful wireless network throughout the convention center using minimal devices, cables, and switch ports.”

“We are honored to be selected once again by Interop’s network and management team as the Wireless Provider for their events,” said Dirk Gates, Founder and CEO of Xirrus. “The proliferation of Wi-Fi devices into the enterprise has caused IT professionals to focus less on coverage-based Wi-Fi and more on performance – the amount of bandwidth delivered and number of users supported in densely populated areas has become critically important. Like Switched Ethernet, our Wi-Fi Array architecture distributes the power and intelligence to the edge of the network, delivering better performance and security for users regardless of device or application.”

Xirrus will showcase its powerful 802.11n multi-radio Wi-Fi Arrays throughout the events and at booth #1139. Come see the Power of Wi-Fi.

Students and Staff Increase Learning through the Use of Wi-Fi-enabled Netbooks Connected to Xirrus Wi-Fi Arrays

Xirrus®, the Wi-Fi “Power Play” that delivers the most coverage, bandwidth, and user density in the industry, announced today the deployment of their high performance 802.11n Wi-Fi Arrays across St. Bede’s College located just outside Mentone, Victoria, Australia. Known for their academic and sporting excellence, St. Bede’s College is a 7-12 Catholic Secondary College for boys with enrollment of over 1,330 students and faculty. To make learning more enjoyable and efficient, the school decided to roll out netbooks for their students and faculty. Xirrus was selected as the Wi-Fi solution because Xirrus was able to deliver the necessary bandwidth to support dense user populations with 75% fewer devices, cables, switch ports, and power.

“We wanted to bring the whole IT experience into the classroom, so that on their desk a student is integrated with his books, he’s taking his notes, and he’s got his netbook right there with him,” said David Cracknell, IT Director at St. Bede’s College. “Every netbook that we put out, we’ve got a massive positive response from staff and students on how it’s working. It gives them flexibility in the classroom.”

“The first test of the Xirrus product was when we brought out the new set of staff notebooks – we had 30 netbooks sitting in the one room ready to connect,” continued David. “I was a little bit nervous, but it performed faultlessly. It was fantastic. Every staff member was on wireless within seconds. All there was were smiles around the room of the staff all getting on wirelessly. They could throw their blue cables away.”

Talking about costs, David said, “We were making a massive savings going with Xirrus. We were only cabling to one point to support the whole floor. If we went with the alternative offering, we would have been running data and power cables to multiple points per floor. It was an easy choice for us.”

Xirrus Selected for Their Ability to Provide High Performance Wi-Fi in Dense Environments

Xirrus®, the Wi-Fi “Power Play” that delivers the most coverage, bandwidth, and user density in the industry, announced today their deployment of Xirrus high performance 802.11n Wi-Fi Arrays at the Illawara Grammar School located on the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia. Opened in 1959, this renowned Anglican School consists of 180 staff supporting nearly 1,150 students from Preparatory to Year 12. Xirrus Wi-Fi Arrays were selected because it was the only architecture capable of providing the necessary bandwidth and user capacity required to support their digital learning initiatives well into the future.
Neil Cross, ICT Manager at Illawara Grammar School explained their search for a high performance Wi-Fi solution, “We needed a unique type of set-up to be able to accommodate all our classrooms. We needed to find a wireless solution that was going to afford a whole gamete of different devices. When we looked at what the capacity, or what the saturation would be, we realized that there are not a lot of [Wi-Fi} solutions out there. We looked at several vendors, but those would have required hundreds of APs.”

Describing his decision to choose Xirrus, Neil said,” When we heard about Xirrus it seemed they’re offering something outside the box and it seemed to be what we were looking for. It’s going to be a solution that we can manage and tailor to our needs. [Xirrus] is very versatile… we can manage throughput, we can manage the capacity, and we can upgrade as well.”
